Dhaka Metropolitan Police will investigate State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain’s display of a firearm during an anti-drug operation in Gendaria, a senior officer said on 18 October.

Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said the deputy commissioner of the Wari division had been tasked with examining the incident. Police would take action if the inquiry established a breach of the law, he said.

Videos of the operation on 17 October showed Ishraque, the MP for Dhaka-6, holding a pistol near the Dayaganj railway crossing. His involvement and the conduct of people accompanying him prompted questions about the authority for the operation.

Ishraque said his weapon was licensed and that he displayed it for protection against a possible attack. He maintained that his actions were lawful. The police announcement was an undertaking to investigate, rather than a finding against him.

Late on 18 October, news organisations reported, citing unnamed senior sources, that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman had instructed Ishraque to resign. His press officer, Mahfuz Kabir Mukta, rejected the reports in a statement, saying no such instruction had been given.
