Salahuddin pledges caretaker government for the next national election

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed says the next national election will be held under a caretaker government, with the system restored through constitutional amendments. He made the commitment at a ministry briefing on Sunday. His statement sets out the government’s intention; it does not mean Parliament has already enacted the changes.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said on 25 October that the next national election would be held under a caretaker government after the necessary constitutional changes.

Speaking at a briefing at the Home Ministry, he said there was political consensus on restoring the system and described it as a commitment arising from the government’s earlier movement.

He referred to the Supreme Court’s decision concerning the 13th Amendment, but said a constitutional amendment would still be needed to formally restore the arrangement.

The statement followed the Durga Puja celebrations and renewed the government’s public position on the administration that would oversee the next election.

The minister’s commitment is a proposed constitutional course. The briefing did not itself enact an amendment or provide a completed legal framework for appointing and operating the future caretaker administration.
