France announced on Friday, 23 October, that around 70,000 security personnel would be deployed nationwide for the next day’s demonstrations. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez set out the plan after violence on the sidelines of the previous weekend’s protests, warning of online calls for further disorder.
The deployment represents an increase of about a fifth on the previous weekend. President Emmanuel Macron also convened his defence council and met representatives of secondary-school pupils. Protests over school buildings, staffing and education conditions have broadened into anger over living costs and the government.
The Louvre and other major museums in Paris will close on Saturday, while the Art Basel fair is ending early. In Marseille, authorities announced an exception allowing a union-organised demonstration and reversed a plan to suspend all public transport. Restrictions remain elsewhere, including a limited protest route between Bastille and Nation in Paris.
Student representatives said they would raise the condition of school infrastructure and the university admissions system with Macron. The government has distinguished those demands from the looting and damage during earlier demonstrations. Human Rights Watch has urged police to protect the public while allowing peaceful protest, expressing concern about reported injuries to children from crowd-control weapons.
