Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said on Thursday, 22 October, that seven vessels had been hit or damaged in the Persian Gulf and near the Strait of Hormuz. The announcement also warned that US military bases in the region could face attacks if Washington continued helping ships use routes opposed by Iran.
The IRGC Navy said its forces had tracked four vessels on Wednesday and struck them while they were transferring oil in the northern Persian Gulf. It alleged that the transfers violated its rules and said the ships caught fire.
The force separately claimed three vessels struck mines near Hormuz and were left unable to move. Iranian state television carried the account, which did not identify the ships’ flags or provide casualty details.
The damage claims were not independently established in the initial reports.
Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and is a major route for international energy shipments.
