France is preparing a reinforced security operation for new demonstrations on Saturday, 24 October, as President Emmanuel Macron called a review of the authorities’ response to last weekend’s riots. The Yellow Vest movement formally submitted plans on 21 October for another march through Paris.

Macron said he would meet ministers and intelligence officials on 22 October to examine what happened during the 17 October unrest. The government has acknowledged failures in its initial response and promised a much larger police deployment for the next protests.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu met union leaders on 21 October. In a letter before the talks, he said the aim was to protect the freedom to demonstrate while preventing violence. CGT union leader Sophie Binet said the public’s anger required a political response; after the meeting, she said no new measures had been announced.

Student groups have also called demonstrations to demand more investment in education. The Yellow Vests are mobilising over living costs and public services, while unions have called a separate nationwide action for 5 November.

A second consecutive night under local curfews passed without major incidents on 20–21 October.
