European governments demanded action after Israeli settlers attacked a visiting delegation near Taybeh in the occupied West Bank. The European Union condemned the assault on Sunday, 18 October, and urged Israel to hold those responsible to account.

The delegation had joined Palestinian olive farmers on Saturday. It included Belgian, French and Polish diplomats, Catholic representatives and Bernard Baudoux, mayor of the French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries.

Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot said a Belgian vehicle was damaged and that his country’s team was safe. Baudoux told AFP that masked men kicked him and struck him with iron bars. He did not require hospital treatment.

France and Belgium called for prosecutions. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar condemned the attackers, and police said they were investigating. Israel’s military said the visit had not been coordinated with it. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office questioned the reports and alleged a campaign to discredit settlers.

The attack followed an assault on American photojournalist Heidi Levine a day earlier. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed concern about the attack on Levine. The EU also called for effective protection for Palestinians and journalists during the olive harvest and an end to settlement expansion.
