Pacific monitoring region hits record temperature as El Niño strengthens

Copernicus says September’s average temperature in the Niño 3.4 Pacific monitoring region reached 29.70°C, exceeding previous peaks. Its latest bulletin also recorded the second-warmest September globally. The findings show unusually warm oceans as El Niño strengthens, with different weather effects across regions.

From 14 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Sea temperatures in a key Pacific region used to monitor El Niño reached a record monthly level in September, according to the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service.

The Niño 3.4 region averaged 29.70°C, exceeding the peak monthly values associated with the exceptionally strong El Niño episodes of 1982–83, 1997–98 and 2015–16.

Copernicus released the findings on 12 October, with further coverage published on 13 October. The bulletin describes a strengthening El Niño within an already unusually warm global ocean.

Across oceans between 60 degrees north and south, September’s average sea-surface temperature reached 21.05°C, the highest recorded for that month.

The same assessment ranked September 2026 as the second-warmest September globally. Average surface-air temperatures were estimated at 1.63°C above the 1850–1900 reference level.

El Niño is a recurring climate pattern that changes tropical Pacific temperatures and influences rainfall and atmospheric circulation elsewhere. Its effects vary by region, including increased risks of drought or heavy rainfall.

The temperature record does not establish that this is the strongest El Niño ever. Copernicus said an index adjusting for warmer background oceans does not yet support that conclusion. The agency also notes that ocean-temperature estimates can differ between data products.
