South African passport-fraud conviction reported as sentencing awaits

A former South African Home Affairs employee was convicted on 264 counts involving fraud, corruption and identity and immigration offences, according to police and a 3 October 2026 Taung Daily News report.

The Durban court delivered its verdict on 1 October. Police linked the case to passport processing at the Pietermaritzburg office between 2022 and 2023. The defendant remains in custody, with a pre-sentencing report scheduled for 13 November; no sentence has yet been reported.
