Former US congressman Rivera sentenced in foreign-lobbying case

Former US congressman David Rivera received a ten-year prison sentence on 2 October, the US Justice Department confirmed. AFP reported the decision on 3 October 2026.

A federal jury had convicted him of offences involving undisclosed work for Venezuela’s government and money laundering. AFP reported that Rivera intends to appeal. The sentencing concerns those convictions; it does not resolve a separate pending case.
