China’s exports surged 36.3 per cent from a year earlier in September, putting the country on course to exceed a $1tn trade surplus earlier than it did in 2025.
Imports also rose strongly, by 31 per cent. The monthly trade surplus reached $133.5bn, taking the total for the first nine months of 2026 to $938.1bn.
Technology and vehicles drove the expansion. Semiconductor exports more than doubled in value over the first nine months, while car shipments increased by more than 50 per cent in both value and volume.
The figures support Chinese factory output at a time when domestic demand and the property market remain subdued. They also increase the risk of trade restrictions as the United States and European Union challenge China’s industrial and exchange-rate policies. A recent EU agreement to limit Chinese hybrid-car imports may slow one source of growth.
For Asian suppliers, the boom offers demand for components and logistics but also sharper competition in third-country markets. Bangladesh could benefit from cheaper machinery and inputs, yet its manufacturers may face stronger Chinese competition in textiles, light engineering and other export categories. The balance will depend on exchange rates and trade measures as much as headline growth.
