Five missing after flash flood damages homes and hydropower in Nepal

Five people were missing after a flash flood swept through Nepal’s Gorkha district. Officials reported about 45 houses swept away, damage to hydropower projects and bridges, and at least 82 rescues. The initial explanation was a river blockage that burst after a landslide.

From 13 October 2026 — Daily Brief

A flash flood in central Nepal swept away homes and left at least five people missing, officials said on 12 October, as rescue work continued in Gorkha district.

The flood occurred on 11 October. National disaster agency chief Dharam Raj Uprety said a landslide appeared to have blocked the river before the obstruction burst.

Officials reported that around 45 houses were swept away. Three hydropower projects and four bridges were damaged, disrupting infrastructure as well as communities along the river.

At least 82 people, including nine foreigners, had been rescued. Four helicopters were deployed for rescue and evacuation, and authorities urged residents near the Budhi Gandaki to move to safer ground.

The five people were reported missing, not confirmed dead. The account of a landslide-related blockage was the agency’s initial explanation; further investigation was needed to establish the flood’s trigger and inform measures to reduce similar risks.
