French authorities said on 25 October that police had arrested 1,314 people during the previous day’s demonstrations over the high cost of living.
The Interior Ministry reported 53 injured officers, 75 fires and 24 looted shops. It said several investigations had been opened after violence around demonstrations in major cities.
The ministry’s statement did not give a complete count of injuries among protesters. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez had spoken on Saturday of two seriously injured protesters, in Toulouse and Clermont-Ferrand.
The demonstrations marked a second consecutive weekend of unrest, with protest groups calling for further rallies. Police unions warned about the strain of maintaining large deployments.
The arrest and damage figures are the authorities’ account of the weekend. Arrest does not establish criminal responsibility, and the reported officer casualties do not represent the full human toll of the protests.
