Aung San Suu Kyi’s son said he spoke with the detained former Myanmar leader on Thursday, 22 October, for the first time in more than five years. Kim Aris announced the contact in a Facebook post.

Aris, who lives in Britain, later told AFP that the conversation concerned family matters and that his mother sounded fairly healthy.

He welcomed the opportunity to hear her voice but said the single conversation did not amount to regular family access. Suu Kyi is 81 and remains detained. Myanmar authorities say she is under house arrest in Naypyidaw.

She has been held since the military removed her elected government in the February 2021 coup. Authorities said she was transferred from prison to house arrest in April this year and subsequently released photographs of private meetings.

The reports did not establish whether further contact with her family would be permitted. Aris thanked those who had supported efforts to obtain access to his mother while continuing to question her detention.
