Dhaka stocks retreat as turnover falls by about a quarter
The DSEX fell about 0.9 per cent to roughly 5,482 on 4 October, while turnover dropped by about a quarter. Published reports round the turnover figure differently but agree on weaker trading and broad-based selling. Brokerage commentary linked investor caution to earnings and dividend announcements.

Dhaka’s main share index fell about 0.9 per cent on 4 October as selling pressure continued and trading turnover declined by roughly a quarter from the previous session.
The DSEX closed at approximately 5,482. The blue-chip DS30 index also fell, ending near 2,085, while the Chattogram exchange’s main indices finished lower.
Published turnover figures use different levels of precision. The Daily Observer reports Tk542.98 crore, The Business Standard gives Tk542 crore and Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha rounds the value to Tk5.4 billion. All three describe a decline of about 25 per cent from the preceding session.
The reports also differ on the exact number of securities that rose, fell or remained unchanged. They consistently show that decliners substantially outnumbered gainers.
Brokerage commentary cited by The Business Standard linked the selling to caution over company earnings and dividend announcements. That is an assessment of investor sentiment, rather than an explanation established for every trade.
Textiles accounted for the largest share of turnover, followed by general insurance and pharmaceuticals. Most sectors lost ground, although jute and non-bank financial institutions advanced. The session extended the market’s losses for a second consecutive trading day.
