LPG cylinder price rises Tk252 as household fuel costs climb

Bangladesh’s energy regulator has raised the price of a 12kg LPG cylinder to Tk1,837, up Tk252. The new rate took effect on 4 October. Autogas also rose to Tk84.62 a litre, increasing costs for households and drivers who depend on the fuel.

The regulated price of a 12kg liquefied petroleum gas cylinder has risen to Tk1,837 in Bangladesh, increasing household cooking costs as consumers also report difficulty obtaining supplies at official rates.

The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission announced the Tk252 increase on 4 October. The revised price took effect at 6pm that day. A 12kg cylinder previously cost Tk1,585, making the increase almost 16 per cent.

Autogas, the LPG sold as vehicle fuel, rose to Tk84.62 a litre from Tk73.09. The new rate adds Tk11.53 to the regulated cost of each litre.

Higher international prices and import-related costs fed into the adjustment. The Saudi contract price used in the calculation rose to US$712.50 a tonne from US$647.75, while the freight premium increased to US$250 from US$160 a tonne.

The announcement comes amid reports of retail shortages and cylinders being sold above the regulated price. LPG operators have disputed claims that inadequate imports explain the supply pressure, saying sufficient fuel has been brought into the country.

For households that rely on bottled gas, the immediate change is a higher official refill price. Availability and compliance with that price remain separate concerns, particularly where consumers already face demands for additional payments.
