Secretariat move to Agargaon receives in-principle government backing

The government has backed moving the Secretariat to Dhaka’s former trade fair ground in principle. Cabinet approval is still required. Preparatory work has begun, but a final budget, construction timetable and date for relocating ministries have not been established.

From 13 October 2026 — Daily Brief

The government has agreed in principle to move the Secretariat to the former trade fair ground in Dhaka’s Agargaon, although the cabinet has yet to give final approval.

Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher said the position was reached at a meeting chaired by the prime minister on 7 October. His account was published on 12 October.

The Planning Commission and the Public Works Ministry have begun preparatory work. A ministry official said the Department of Architecture presented three designs and that a preliminary preference emerged during the meeting.

Relocating the administrative complex has been discussed under previous governments without being implemented. The present announcement therefore marks an in-principle decision rather than the commencement of a fully approved project.

The report did not establish a final construction cost, procurement schedule or date for ministries to move. Cabinet consideration remains the next significant approval step before the relocation can proceed.
