The parliamentary standing committee on the Foreign Ministry has sought a detailed account of the recent executions of two Bangladeshi nationals in Saudi Arabia.

At its 25 October meeting, the committee asked what measures were being taken to prevent similar incidents. It also sought information on any negligence by consular officials and action against them if a lapse is established.

The ministry told the committee that it had requested detailed information from the Saudi authorities. The committee asked to be briefed once that material arrives.

Members also called for a plan to modernise Bangladesh’s missions in Saudi Arabia and improve the services available to expatriates. Protection of Bangladeshi women working in Saudi Arabia and other Middle Eastern countries was another recommendation.

The committee’s request for scrutiny does not establish that consular negligence occurred.
