Dhaka plans eight colour-coded zones for auto-rickshaws

Dhaka's two city corporations are preparing to divide the capital into eight zones for auto-rickshaws and e-bikes. Vehicles would be assigned colours according to their zone, with limits on registrations. The rules are still being developed, so the restrictions are not yet an operating citywide system.

From 9 October 2026 — Daily Brief

Dhaka’s two city corporations plan to divide the capital into eight zones for auto-rickshaws and e-bikes, assigning different colours to vehicles in each area.

Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Md Shafiqul Islam Khan described the plan on 8 October. Four zones would fall under the northern corporation and four under Dhaka South.

Under the proposal, vehicles registered for one zone would not be permitted to operate in another. Officials also intend to set caps on vehicle numbers based on local demand and stop issuing new registrations once a zone reaches its limit.

The authorities say the measures could reduce congestion and prevent uncontrolled entry of small vehicles from surrounding areas.

However, the rules and enforcement arrangements have not been finalised. Drivers’ livelihoods, passenger access and the availability of affordable alternatives will be important issues during implementation.
