Supreme Court clears path to fill around 15,000 teacher posts

The Supreme Court stayed a High Court ruling on experience requirements for senior posts in MPO-listed institutions, allowing recruitment for around 15,000 headteacher, principal and related vacancies to proceed.

From 8 October 2026 — Daily Brief

The Supreme Court has cleared the way for the government to continue recruitment to around 15,000 senior teaching posts in Monthly Pay Order-listed educational institutions.

A chamber judge of the Appellate Division stayed a High Court judgment that had struck down an amended rule requiring 18 years of teaching experience for appointments to posts including headteacher and principal.

The education ministry had appealed against the High Court decision. Following the stay, officials said there is no legal bar to continuing the recruitment process, with viva voce examinations due to begin on 15 October.

A January circular identified 10,278 vacant headteacher posts under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, 3,131 senior posts under the Madrasa Education Directorate and 150 principal or superintendent posts under technical education. The total could rise to around 15,000.

The court directed the authorities to keep 46 posts reserved for teachers who challenged the amended experience rule.

The order does not finally resolve the underlying legal dispute. It allows recruitment to move forward while the case continues through the appellate process.
