The reported death toll from a drone attack on a market in Abyei, a territory disputed by Sudan and South Sudan, has risen to 153, a local official said on 21 October. Rescue workers were still recovering bodies after Monday’s strike on Amiet market.

Abyei’s interim information minister, Yohana Akol, told AFP that the number could increase. He said the victims included people from Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, and that injured survivors were being taken to hospital.

Local authorities blamed Sudan’s army. Responsibility for the attack has not been independently verified. Reuters reported that the military did not immediately respond to its request for comment. A military source separately told the BBC that the army had targeted what it described as a fuel supply point for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

South Sudan summoned Sudan’s ambassador to protest against the attack. The two countries have disputed control of oil-rich Abyei since South Sudan became independent in 2011.

The strike comes amid intensified drone attacks in Sudan’s war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which began in April 2023. The United Nations condemned the attacks and warned of harm to civilians and essential infrastructure.
