UN poverty report puts 1.2 billion people in acute deprivation
The latest UN multidimensional-poverty report estimates that 1.2 billion people face acute deprivation, 51.5 million more than in the previous edition. Population growth contributed to the increase, and updated observations were available for only 13 of the 108 countries covered.

The latest UN multidimensional-poverty report estimates that 1.2 billion people face acute deprivation, an increase of 51.5 million compared with the previous edition.
The report, released on 12 October by the UN Development Programme and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative, examines overlapping disadvantages such as inadequate housing, sanitation, electricity, food and education.
More than half of those counted were children. The largest concentrations remained in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
Important qualifications accompany the headline increase. Population growth contributed to the higher total, and new observations were available for only 13 of the 108 developing countries covered. The comparison should not be presented as a fresh, simultaneous survey of every country.
The longer-term picture was mixed: 33 countries had halved their poverty rates over 15 years. In some countries, falling poverty rates still coincided with rising numbers of poor people because the population grew faster.
