Bangladesh is continuing discussions with India over a possible bilateral visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said on Monday, without announcing a date.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Bay of Bengal Conversation in Dhaka, Kobir said the prime minister had not ruled out a visit. He said it should take place through a proper bilateral framework and in a conducive environment.
The remarks signalled continuing diplomatic engagement rather than confirmation that an itinerary had been agreed. Kobir acknowledged difficulties in the relationship but said he believed dialogue could help resolve them.
He also addressed the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, which is due to expire in December. Bangladesh would seek an outcome consistent with its national interests, he said, while leaving open whether discussions would produce a renewal or a new arrangement.
Kobir said Bangladesh’s committee was ready and awaiting a response from the Indian side. He did not announce an agreed text or a completed negotiating outcome.
The minister described India as an important regional partner and said Bangladesh wanted balanced engagement while preserving its ability to make independent foreign-policy choices. Further bilateral discussions are needed before any visit date or treaty arrangement can be confirmed.
