Two people were killed and five others injured when a tourist vehicle plunged into a roadside ravine in Bandarban’s Thanchi area on Monday afternoon, police and Border Guard Bangladesh said.

The vehicle, locally known as a chander gari, crashed at about 3.45pm while travelling from Dimpahar towards the Tindu or Tendumukh area. The reported location was roughly 600 metres from a nearby border guard checkpost.

BGB personnel and police joined the rescue operation. Two bodies were recovered, while the five injured people were taken to Alikadam Upazila Health Complex for treatment, according to the accounts from rescuers and police.

The identities of the dead and injured had not been confirmed in those reports. Preliminary information suggested the visitors were from Cox’s Bazar, but that did not amount to a completed identification of each victim.

Witness and official accounts said the driver lost control before the vehicle left the road. The available reports did not establish a final investigative finding about what caused the loss of control.

Police said the bodies would be sent for post-mortem examinations. Further legal and administrative procedures were under way, with identification of the victims and examination of the circumstances remaining part of the authorities’ response.
